In Penang, Malaysia, cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are on the rise, with 1,675 cases recorded this year.
Parents are advised to seek medical treatment for their children at the first sign of infection, and travellers are advised that the disease mainly affects young children and symptoms include fever, oral lesions, and a rash on the hands, feet and buttocks. Although there is no vaccine or preventative medication, good hand hygiene can greatly reduce the risk of infection. Travellers should also be aware that seasonal epidemics of the disease occur throughout Asia.
“Members of the public do not have to be worried as the hand, foot and mouth disease situation in Penang is still under control, but we only hope that parents will get immediate treatment if their children show symptoms of the disease,” Penang Health Director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah told a Malaysian news outlet.
